Description
Western catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) is a flowering deciduous tree native to the United States. It is commonly found growing in medium to wet soils along streams, rivers and low areas. Its leaves are heart-shaped and up to 10 cm long, arranged alternately along its branches. In the late summer, white-to-pink flowers emerge which develop into long, cigar-like seedpods with brown spots. The fragrant flowers attract various pollinators. Western catalpa can reach up to 20 m tall and makes a great landscape tree for urban areas. It is also used as a host plant for the caterpillars of the Catalpa Sphinx moth.
