Switchgrass

SwitchgrassSwitchgrass Panicum virgatum

This native grass is a little taller than most ornamental grasses.  It may reach 6′ tall and 4′ wide.  The green foliage grows slowly in the spring but as it matures it sends out a hazy cloud flower another foot or two over the foliage.  The Switchgrass is known for its autumn color which changes from green to  yellow, orange, and purplish red.  The leaves of the grass turn golden in the winter.  Do not plant it over 7,000 feet.
